The school year has ended, which means I can devote much more time to creating samples for design work! I thought it would be fun to give my website guests a little glimpse into the process of making posters and other marketing materials for performing artists. I selected a headshot of myself from a self-portrait session I did a few months ago and made two contrasting sample posters from it, using an old Van Halen song ("Little Dreamer") as the theme. Here below, you can see the progress from unedited photo to poster template.
First comes the raw unedited photo, which looks a little silly to me, truth be told:
First comes the raw unedited photo, which looks a little silly to me, truth be told:
...so I edit the photo to clean it up and make it look a bit more professional...
...then comes the fun part! I've done some further photo editing to add more striking colors to the photo, and I've decorated the negative space with some dynamic motion-inspired basic shapes to accent the title text.
Once I finished this poster, I thought I'd add another sample to provide some contrast. I returned to the edited photo and added some more digital effects to create an entirely different mood, and then based the design of the poster template off of the newly minted mood.
I hope you've enjoyed this tour through my process! I began a Facebook contest today to see which design people like most, and the winner will receive a free poster PDF designed by me for their next event! The offer expires May 27th, so be sure and vote on Facebook ASAP! Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=491811057539456&id=243774065676491
